Resilience Through Life (Focusing on the Positive)
Why does positivity matter? There are so many reasons! Here are a few examples of resilience-in-positive-psychology.
By focusing on the positive, one can bounce back quicker from setbacks. We all are going to experience various challenges throughout life. How one copes through the situation makes significant difference in terms of resiliency.
We have an increased capacity to cope with stress and be resilient through life when focusing on the positive. The power of relationship is a significant factor, especially in building resiliency for young children. A supportive, warm, authoritative parenting style is especially helpful in nurturing this as part of positive-parenting.
Having at least one supportive person to confide in during times of struggle can help ease the burden of stress and cope during times of trauma or hardship. Thoughts and emotions can feel overwhelming. Focusing on the positive can help prevent one from getting “stuck” in negative patterns of repetitive-thoughts that impact forward movement. Sometimes we need some motivation and encouragement to keep going. A therapist can help work with unhelpful thinking patterns as well as whatever emotions you are experiencing.
For those who are new to therapy, having a space to process your thoughts, feelings, and experiences related to difficult situations and learning some strategies to cope can be a great place to start. Your therapist can come alongside you so that you do not feel so alone, tap into your inner strengths, and help create a sense of hope.
“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think, and loved more than you’ll every know”. –A.A. Milne
Reframing one’s thinking is so powerful. Failures can be reframed as new opportunities. Setbacks and challenges can provide opportunities to analyze the situation and come back stronger and more prepared. I am amazed by the perseverance to keep going and be able to thrive amidst adversity in life. Humans are incredibly resilient!
By focusing on the positive, we can reduce the negative physical tolls that mental and physical health has on both the mind and body and offset the impact of chronic stress.
